Fehlzündungen (Misfires)
Concrete: The cast stone is omnipresent. In a few years, there will be more concrete than biomass on earth. Hardly any building project can do without it. For the architects of the modern age, it meant unlimited possibilities. It set standards for efficient infrastructure and promises affordable living space thanks to its cost efficiency. However, it has also been criticised for its environmental incompatibility. To this day, there is no material that could easily replace it. Contrary to the widespread opinion that it will last for thousands of years like the Pantheon, most modern concrete buildings have a lifespan of 40 to 80 years. Its production is harmful to the climate and consumes valuable resources such as gravel and sand.
The sculpture Misfires forms a round arch made of concrete hardened in a bag, which appears to be cut through the centre and pulled apart. Concrete and cement bags must be used within a year of being filled and stored in a dry place until then, otherwise they no longer fulfil the standard. As the material is very cheap, there is usually a surplus and some of the goods are disposed of.
Beton: Der gegossene Stein ist allgegenwärtig. In wenigen Jahren wird es mehr Beton als Biomasse auf der Erde geben. Kaum ein Bauvorhaben kommt ohne ihn aus. Für die Architekten der Moderne bedeutete er unbegrenzte Möglichkeiten. Er setzte Maßstäbe für eine leistungsfähige Infrastruktur und verspricht durch seine Kosteneffizienz bezahlbaren Wohnraum. Wegen seiner Umweltunverträglichkeit steht er aber auch in der Kritik. Bis heute gibt es kein Material, das ihn ohne weiteres ersetzen könnte. Entgegen der weit verbreiteten Meinung, er überdauere Jahrtausende wie das Pantheon, haben die meisten modernen Betonbauten eine Lebensdauer von 40 bis 80 Jahren. Seine Herstellung ist klimaschädlich und verbraucht wertvolle Ressourcen wie Kies und Sand.
Die Skulptur Fehlzündungen bildet einen Rundbogen aus im Sack ausgehärteten Beton, der in der Mitte durchschnitten und auseinandergezogen scheint. Beton und Zementsäcke müssen nach Abfüllung innerhalb eines Jahres verbraucht und bis dahin trocken gelagert werden, ansonsten erfüllen sie nicht mehr die Norm. Da das Material sehr günstig ist, wird meist mit Überschuss kalkuliert und ein Teil der Ware wird entsorgt.
